Did you know that there are common food items that should never be put down the disposal? So many popular ingredients can clog the sink and lead to drainage problems.
RICE. Rice expands when soaked in water – and expands, and expands – making a thick sticky mess that can cause a blockage (that can be difficult to clear).
Items such as rice, coffee grounds, eggshells, animal bones (such as chicken or fish), hair, and grease should NEVER be put down the garbage disposal (or any drain in your house, including your toilet). In my experience, potato peels are a bad idea as well, LOL. And obviously, no man-made/non-food materials should go down the disposal …
In general, you should put as little as possible down the disposal. Remove as much of the food waste from plates, pans, and cooking utensils as possible before rinsing them in the sink.
Garbage Disposals require regular maintenance as well. They can be cleaned monthly with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda (this is actually good for all of your drains). That will help remove buildup and bacteria. Degreasing should also be performed on a regular basis (put a few small chunks of fresh lemon down the disposal). You should also run cold water through the empty garbage disposal on a regular basis to ensure the safe operation of the device.
